@Gizmo: From what I can see, I think the spam in the past 6 months or so has been greatly reduced from what it was last year. If that trend continues this year, we might think about changing our policy sometime.

Spam is definitely a problem, and we do use scripts to help combat it, as well as common sense by the admins. 25 posts to open posting has been in place since we began 3 years ago; I'm not inclined to change it on my own unless other admins think it's a good idea. Rest assured, they will see...

Red X in Synaptic tray icon, Error in checkAPT.py

Sorry, I've been afk all day with some business. George, everything with 'Hit' or 'Ign' is normal. But that Chrome server isn't syncing properly with your box, and that is what I expected to see, or nearly so. It might not be a problem on your end. Since some time has passed, try the same...

Red X in Synaptic tray icon, Error in checkAPT.py

OK, that's good. sudo works and accepts your password normally. I think you entered your password wrong the first time. What happened this time is the normal output. OK, back to business. Run: sudo apt-get update and get back to me.

Red X in Synaptic tray icon, Error in checkAPT.py

OK George, that is what exactly what is supposed to happen. 'su <enter> + password <enter>' opens a root terminal prompt [the # thingy]. DO NOT do this unless one of us specifically asks you to do it. NEVER do it on your own, because it gives you all the power of the Linux universe, and you...

You do not need sudo for the 'ls' command. You would only need to sudo for apt-get. What happens when you type su?

Red X in Synaptic tray icon, Error in checkAPT.py

The first command I gave you will request a password, as sudo always does. Then it should sync your package database with the repo servers. If one of the servers isn't connecting, is down, or is problematic in some way, the command might fail, but there will be output that will tell us why...

Red X in Synaptic tray icon, Error in checkAPT.py

George, open a terminal, and see if this works: sudo apt-get update Let me know what it tells you in the terminal. If it upchucks and/or complains: ls -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d And report to me likewise.

Justice Department cracks California iPhone, didn't need Apple's help

From USA Today: SAN FRANCISCO — Although the government officially withdrew from its battle against Apple Monday, many observers sense the tech privacy war is just getting started. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2016/03/28/apple-justice-department-farook/82354040/

How to send an email circa 1984

Great video, watch it. It's hard to believe how things were only 30 years ago. Nice modem. Nice 'dial up' on rotary phone, too. Gotta love that. It reminds me of the time-sharing computer terminals we used to have in high school and university, that recorded our BASIC programming on rolls...

No login possible after sudo in Mint

Can you UN-tick the box to the left of 'enable automatic login'? @George: sudo mdmsetup Enter your password, and go to the autologin page. Untick the 'enable autologin' and untick the 'enable timed login' boxes. Then logout or reboot, and see what happens.

No login possible after sudo in Mint

@Daniel~ In the autologin screenshot, what does it look like when you dropdown the 'enable automatic login/daniel' pane? I am pretty sure this is where George can disable the autologin function, and make it so he has to enter his password when booting. Can you screenshot that for me?

Discussion of systemd adoption by Debian, openrc, sysvinit

I agree that it isn't the appropriate arena for it, but I don't think the guy was 'trolling'. I was more interested in the thought process than in the flames when I read it.

@Daniel~, I need to see the window you raise after entering the password. 'Security' tab.

No login possible after sudo in Mint

OK, that's done. Your sudo/keyring problem is gone. Now, to remove the autologin, try this. I was waiting for Daniel to try it first, but he hasn't checked in, so: sudo mdmsetup You should raise a window with some tabs after you enter your password. Click on the 'security' tab and tell me...

No login possible after sudo in Mint

@ Daniel @ Booman: OK, looks like George's sudo problem is most likely solved. While I wait for him to confirm this, can one of you Mint users please type 'sudo mdmsetup' and tell me what you see? I'm looking for the 'security' page. Maybe a screenshot for my benefit? I think this is where...

No login possible after sudo in Mint

George, I'll help you with the autologin later. Stand by for that. First, we need to test. Can you sudo now? Try: sudo fdisk -l [that is a lowercase L] You should be asked for your normal login password, and then you should get some output. If you see some hard disk information output...

No login possible after sudo in Mint

Nope, if keyrings-OLD is there, you have successfully renamed the directory. I'm satisfied with that. Right, you're going to reboot now. One thing though, if you are asked for any *new* passwords upon rebooting, it should be a one-time-only deal. If you are asked for a 'new keyring...
