No login possible after sudo in Mint

Hmm, looks like Debiankinder don't install the wheel group by default, so I guess that's not your problem. You shouldn't need it if sudo is working properly, anyhow. The wheel group is a vestigal UNIX thing and its presence seems to depend on the distro in use. Your output shows that you ARE...

No login possible after sudo in Mint

George, open a terminal and type su - then 'enter'. [that's a hyphen] Then, see if you can get a root prompt there by typing your password. Can you not copy/paste the contents of your terminals? You can redact the sensitive information if you want. It should look something like this...

    Tired of Windows

Here are screenshots of my Sid installation being updated with apt-get: First, you see 'apt-get update' in shot 1 and 2. This is when the repos are hit, and the new file versions are downloaded to the local system. This syncs the local record of current packages with the up-to-date...

    Tired of Windows

Funtoo/Gentoo are different. Debian and Mint, etc aren't source distros, and it's much faster to update a binary package distro. That being said, I update my Gentoo system every other day, but my Sid systems weekly or so, because I don't use them as much.

    Tired of Windows

'apt-get update' isn't going to tell you much by itself. You'll just see a list of the repos it hit, and what it synced to the repos. You WILL see if hitting a particular repo failed; if that is the case, there is a problem on the server end, not in your box. You can change the repos to other...

Apple VS. US Goverment? Who should win?

**Weekend Update** Emily Litella: I hope it does go to the Supremes. I'm willing to bet Diana Ross will help to make Obama look good. Chevy Chase: Err.. Ms Litella...that would be the Supreme Court...of the United States. Emily: Oh, that's very different then, Cheddar Cheese ... [shuffles...

Apple VS. US Goverment? Who should win?

If you hadn't said this, it was going to be my add-on statement to your post. You took the words out of my mouth. Incidentally, Bill Gates himself has stated that he agrees with the government here, for pretty much the same reasons. Not to say that is a surprise, but interesting that he would...

    Need help justifying a decision

On mainboards and processors, I always believe in getting the best I can afford at the time, and then I upgrade the other stuff [GPU, disks] over time. The only exception to this would be if my power supply isn't up to the task. That always comes first, above everything else. In this case I...

Federal Trade Commission slams Butterfly Labs for $39M [tl;dr: they'll never pay up]

US bitcoin mining hardware manufacturer Butterfly Labs finally gets judged in the two year old consumer fraud case, where customers were promised the ASIC mining hardware for up-front payments. The dates kept getting pushed back, and back, and back until...well, you can figure out the rest...

How to install Nvidia 341.92 driver in ubuntu?

Mint's not meant to be a bleeding-edge distro. It's for people who want stability and who don't need the latest incarnation of *everything*. Kernel 3.16 is from Q4, 2014. Not that old [1-1/2 years], but proven reliable, which is the reason it is being used. I quite enjoy the challenge of...

Need advice Distro needed, no gaming needed.

I *very* occasionally get to the west coast. One of my brothers is in San Diego. It is my absolute intention, and I promise - the next time I do get there, there will be a visit to AZ to meet Brian and Cliff [ccperf], whom I have not heard from in quite a while, and a saunter up north to see...
