I've never been much of a multiplayer gamer. But if all it requires is DirectPlay, then you could try this: Select the game shortcut in PlayOnLinux. Click on configure, then select the "Install components" tab. Find "directplay" on the list and click Install. You can test that to see if it works.

I've never tried crossover, but the ResPatchers.exe fails to run if you don't have gdiplus installed, my guide mentions installing it. If you are able to use winetricks with crossover, then you could try to install gdiplus which should make the resolution patch work.
