It was Dan Hartman, who worked a lot with Edgar Winter, wrote "Free Ride" and many other tunes, good guitarist, too. Hall and Oates recorded this song on an album of covers that they did, well after their peak.

That's a good song. It's one of the few songs that Hall and Oates recorded that they didn't write. Pop quiz: who wrote it? [don't cheat now] ;)
