There are Terminal commands to install the newest upgrade, but I'm not sure if you are supposed to do them in sequence or not. If you are on 17.3 then there should be a specific command to install 18.1 or even 18.3 I'll look it up. I've done it before and it worked.

Where are you looking for Mint? The most recent update is now Mint 18.3 The update is painless if you already have Mint 18, 18.1 or 18.2 You just open the updater, click edit and at the bottom should be Upgrade to Mint 18.3
