Hope this is old news GRUB2 28x Backspace bug

Sorry if this is old news, if so I beg your pardon. On 16 Dec '15 "Motherboard.vice.com reported a GRUB2 bug that lets anyone with physical access to your machine simply hit "Backspace" 28 times, and presto they are in to your box. The bug has patches from Ubuntu, Red Hat and Debian. Apologies...

Wow guys, thank you for your support! Yes, it was Slackware that was the true bear, thank you for filling my memory gap-- I totally avoided it. There are so many deserving causes that need seeing to at this time of year that I'm not sure I can afford my new Linux only machine yet. Argh. I...

I used a handful of Linux distributions ages ago, when "Linux for Dummies " didn't exist, so I got "Unix for Dummies" instead. The funny thing is that people say that Linux is much easier than it used to be. I'm not sure that is true. I wish I had a burning yearning to become a Linux user now...

Thanks very much for your reply, Booman! The GEForce 750ti is a great suggestion, but the local retail assembler offers limited choices, I think I'll spring for the GF 950 SC GTX, I've never had a Vidcard that cost more than a C-Note before and this new box may be the last I'll ever have. Thank...

I hope this question isn't off topic. I've made a tentative list of the hardware to put in my new Linux only (the latest Mint, Cinnamon) box. Who knows, mebbe I'll try to install FreeBSD on it as well--some day. I'm a sucker for the OS's mascot. Asus Z170 LGA 1151 Mainboard Intel i5 6500 3.2...

I could be cranky and complain about all the robots...but shazam, it's being done in Illinois, and not Shenzhen. Where's the legitimate gripe?

Thanks very much for supplying the link to the Extreme Tech article Daerandin, it's an important one. As long as we have less and less freedom to run what we want all the while paying incrementally more for the hardware, everybody who matters is happy. If Fast Boot is disabled my Lenovo desktop...

Thank you for letting me know that yes, you only need Windows for some games. Whew, that's a great relief (for me) but not for you--sorry. Maybe the people who created UEFI thought that it's an MS world and loved it that way. Argh.

I dunno if UEFI is actually worse than BIOS was, which wasn't a breeze for me, tbh. Are you running Win8 for compatibility with some games? Please tell me that you are-- because I'd hate to learn that Mint won't cover all my needs, which are pretty much E-mail and the Web. I wish to divorce...

    Mint 17.2 & Win 8 Dual-Boot

Interesting hassles. If only I really understood all of them! I know nothing of the Realtek problem you're having, I sincerely hope that it doesn't complain in a Mint only environment. AFAIK, the MBR is just that, every partition must be on it. I'm very unhappy to read that the Wunnerful...

I've been sick and discombobulated lately, more confused in general than I usually am. I tried to respond yesterday but my password line was blank and I couldn't find it in AOA history. I asked for it to be emailed but it didn't come. Thank you for taking care of the prob on this site's board...

Can't find the Secure Boot option in the UEFI argh, and now the UEFI beeps every time I start up. I guess changing things in "BIOS" has always been mysterious, at least for me. Mr C to the rescue, it'll take a while.

Thank you Daerandin! Weird, FAT 32 in Windows land is SO yesterday, this makes booting even more complicated. Goody! I haven't seen an option for legacy BIOS in my ""BIOS.""

Thank you, Daerandin! Who knew I had a UEFI mainboard? Not me, shuh. Come to think of it, no BIOS company's logo was ever seen on the screen, duh. I did disable Fast Boot just 'cause I thought it would be a good idea. "Secure Boot--Disable it," is noted, thanks. I'm really concerned about...

Oops, that was Mint 17.2, even though "17.3" was iso'd onto the thumb drive. A bolder shade of green would be better but nonetheless it WAS Mint. At least until the bottom of the first page when the block error stopped it loading. I overlooked a BIOS option on the Lenovo 'cause it "didn't look...

My friend Mr C used a booting menu that I couldn't find to boot Mint 14.2 Cinnamon. Amazing! Of course the operation stopped quickly because of some kind of block error that we don't have a clue how to address. But it was really nice to see Mint start up! Never fear, I'll get off of my lazy butt...

The only laptop I have is an ancient Dell which hasn't come out of its carrying case in years. I'm so lame that I don't need a laptop, I have a Lenovo Ideacentre K430 desktop. I'm in the process of building a new standard architecture desktop, I have the new PSU for it, but searching for a mid...
