Need advice Distro needed, no gaming needed.

I just googled, and your Lenovo seem to have a UEFI motherboard. So you need to make sure to Disable two option within the UEFI setup, Secure Boot and Fast Boot. As long as Secure Boot is enabled, you will not be able to boot anything else than Windows. Fast Boot is a windows only feature. It...

I'm going to echo booman on asking for the specific laptop model. Almost all newer laptops do not have BIOS anymore, but UEFI, which is a replacement of the old BIOS. The boot process is also different. When you install a distro such as Linux Mint, it will automatically detect if you have a BIOS...

Ideally you should have the required system libraries installed on your system. Just about everything you need will be available in the repositories for the distribution you need. However, in some cases there may be an incompatibility between a system library and the version a game require...

    Wierd Java Bullsand

I have been able to run Minecraft with OpenJDK7 on Mint, and both OpenJDK 7 and 8 on Arch without any issues. I wonder how you have installed Java. If you install it normally from the official repository of whatever distro you are using, then it should work.

Yes, they check their root path first before checking system path. Like I said, you could also set the Steam runtime libraries as your system path, and to have higher priority than the normal system libraries.

Yes I bought the GOG version. All Linux games you run from Steam will use the Steam runtime, so this is only a problem if you purchased the game on GOG. The Witcher 2 have the same problem, I don't remember the specific library, but there was one library that the game required a specific version...

I have never had any issues using open source java, instead of oracle's java, with Minecraft, both on Arch and the Linux Mint computer I set up for a cousin.

http://www.gog.com/game/soma This game was released today. It is made by the same developer who made the Penumbra games and Amnesia. I just started playing it, the native Linux version works great, like all their previous games. I have not played much yet, but I already had to take a break...

Get ready to shit yourselves: The future of linux compatibility.

If it requires Windows then I don't see this as a step forward. You are still running the game on Windows, which means you are still dependent on Windows and not self contained with just Linux. For a lot of people this probably does not mean anything, but personally I have made it a point to not...

When it comes to Arch, it is never going to pack anything by default since that's the whole point with Arch. However, for the distros aimed being quick and easy to set up with no fuss, it would certainly be a plus if they made some of the more common libraries installed by default. Then again...

You need to use a 64-bit version to utilize more than 4 Gb of memory. When it comes to systemd, there is a lot of differing opinions regarding it. As you have already seen some of the guys here despise it, but there are others that find it very useful (like me). But even me have some gripes with...

    New to Linux

The choice of distro is a very personal choice, but for a newcomer to Linux then I would recommend Linux Mint because it is quite easy to use, and the default Cinnamon desktop will seem familiar to a Windows user. Linux Mint and Ubuntu are almost identical, the biggest difference lies in the...

You have the 32-bit library required for your graphics driver, so that is good. But based on your debug output there are some additional 32-bit libraries you requires, so you should install the following packages: lib32-gnutls lib32-alsa-lib lib32-alsa-plugins lib32-libxml2 lib32-libldap If...

    Rocket League Guide

I have just gone through your whole debug output and it does seem like you are missing some 32-bit libraries. Keep in mind that the you will in any case need to pick one of the options I posted above in order to have this game running. I would like you to run a command just to list all...

    Rocket League Guide

First of all, you need to keep in mind that with Arch Linux nothing is done automatically for you (this is the whole point with Arch). Enabling the multilib repo does not install anything, it only makes the repository available. It is still up to you to install any 32-bit libraries you require...

    Rocket League Guide

Most likely you are just missing some 32-bit libraries. If this is a pretty bare bones Arch install without any additional software then this is likely the case. Run the game with debug so we can hopefully see what is missing. Just select the game shortcut in PlayOnLinux, but instead of...

Can you tell me more about your system, like what distro you are using, 32-bit or 64-bit. And perhaps most importantly, what graphics card do you have?

    Linux Mint at Work

A regular windows license can also only be activated on one computer at a time. If you have it activated on a computer, and then install from the same disc to a VM and activate it, and keep using both then you are technically doing something illegal. I don't know what will happen if you go back...
