Vile seven-minute video showing ‘knife expert’ penetrating a stab vest

The professional press seem to regard enthusiasts with disdain. To be fair, they have good reason to, given some of the crap I've seen churned out by enthusiasts. But it would be good for there to be at least SOME cross-pollination, as it could be beneficial for both groups. And you are...

And so it is with a great many of the discoveries and inventions that we take for granted these days. That's what makes it so fun!

That doesn't stop millions of people from reading it every day. Now, I don't know if that is because the readers are looking for a laugh or if they are actually taking it seriously, but again, there are apparently at least SOME people with influence who pay attention to it (the aforementioned...

Then explain how R.M. got the election so incredibly SPECTACULARLY wrong? She understands NOTHING about what people in the 'flyover' states care about, and seems proud of that fact, with a degree of arrogance that is breathtaking from my viewpoint. She called Brexit a 'global disaster', and...

Lithium-Ion Battery Inventor Invents New Tech for Fast-Charging, Noncombustible Batteries

In principle, yes. In practice, even relatively benign materials can become a problem when you are talking about large quantities. We're much better off to design with recycling in mind from the get-go than to try to shoehorn it in later.

What I find particularly worrisome is how quickly people jumped on this guy, based on nothing more than the article. While I gather that the Daily Mail is regarded as a questionable source of information in the UK by a lot of people, it still has a circulation that makes it THE 2nd LARGEST...

    What happened to PlayOnLinux?

I seem to recall hearing that as well. If true, that means a complete rewrite, as the existing code is Python. TBH, I'm a little perplexed what they hope to gain by rewriting in Java, unless there is a mature framework of some sort they plan to leverage in Java.

    What happened to PlayOnLinux?

My understanding from the last I saw was that POL 5 was pretty much a rewrite, which may have become more work than they anticipated. For sure it handled hidpi very badly.

Lithium-Ion Battery Inventor Invents New Tech for Fast-Charging, Noncombustible Batteries

I read about this a few days ago. It sounds promising, but the real question is whether it can be made economically manufacturable. Li-Ion batteries (and Li-Poly) should be able to replace lead-acid batteries completely (higher cycle life, higher operating temperatures, higher specific energy...

What if Barry Bonds had played with no bat?

That's actually not that surprising, when you consider then central thesis of his argument: That those balls were thrown in fear. Fear is a powerful motivator, and strategically it can make a lot more sense to walk a hitter like that when the bases are empty and try to get the next guy out than...

Slotted WINE: Gentoo users have a reason to celebrate now

Yeah, the introduction of slotted builds in Portage was one of the best things they did (for the packages that support it). Being able to use that with WINE should help people solve a lot of issues.

The Linux Kernel is Bloated and Sad

Hate to rain on the gloom and doom parade here, but to paraphrase Mark Twain "The rumors of the death of the human species are greatly exaggerated". Have we spoiled our environment? Yup, no two ways about it. Will the environment recover? Eventually, but it will take on the order of several...

Microsoft Porting Visual C++ to Linux

Yeah, what they really NEED to do to make a compelling value proposition is make the libraries cross-platform as well, so that you can really leverage all the capabilities of VC. Who knows, that might even be part of their long-term strategy.

Microsoft Porting Visual C++ to Linux

No, because they aren't porting the libraries to Linux (e.g. MFC, .NET, WinForms). They are just letting you use the tool to write standard C++ code using the standard libraries (plus integration with Azure and MSSQL), and then compile it for the target platform. I'm not even sure how...
