Depends on the VM, what your host system resolution is, and what you are running in the VM, both O/S and video drivers

VirtualBox lets you run in fullscreen, which would set it to the same resolution as your desktop.

If we are talking about Virtualbox, did you install the extension pack and the guest additions?
