    Tired of Windows

I don't know how the update process works, tbh. I probably interfered by doing something unnecessary. The red "x" returns in a minute after "refreshing" it. Maybe this will help? This is from the Information-Update Manager dropdown box: "Process 2250 03.04@16:40 ++ Launching mintUpdate...

    Tired of Windows

How about HTTPS Everywhere from the EFF.org? I used it for years on Firefox under MikroScheisse. They mention nothing about Linux and HTTPS Everywhere, so I decided to ask first to prevent messing up the machine. Thank you!

    Tired of Windows

Thank you for your response, booman. Hmm, even if the proffered files rate at "3," which isn't totally reliable? I probably interfered with the process by making it more difficult than it had to be. If you have the time--how important is the Open SSL update that that was offered yesterday? If...

Need advice Distro needed, no gaming needed.

Wowsa six desktops running at once? Dang booman, you are a true enthusiast! Aw heyeck, you've always been a true fanatic Daniel~! The charge for building my box was $60. However, two components magically gained ~$100 each between my list and the final price. These plus the Asus ~$270 27"...

Need advice Distro needed, no gaming needed.

ThunderRd very kindly posted the link so I could get back to this thread, thank you! The new box is as listed above, the only niggle is that the fans make a little noise. The Lenovo machine had two 120's, one on the CPU and the other in back. It was nearly silent but I've always been concerned...

    Tired of Windows

I'm good and confused, yay! The icon in what used to be called The Tray said I need an update. When I used it--aw crud, I'm not remembering all the steps, sorry. Anyway, the one and only security update it needed disappeared and was replaced by a Chrome update plus another something something...

    Tired of Windows

I wasn't certain which DL choice to make with Chrome, but the Ubuntu and Debian option looked good as Packages was mentioned. Mama mia, Mint darn near installed Chrome automagically! So upset I was avoiding an apt-get situation, which I've never done. Whew, luckily I chose the tell as little to...

    Tired of Windows

Gosh, this Mint is just... amazing! It takes thirty seconds to boot up! A SSD probably helps, I imagine. I SO miss the four and a half glorious minutes Win7(real close to Win10--thank you so very much Bill) needed.

    Tired of Windows

I'm using Firefox 'cause I really like it, plus Mint made it so very easy to choose. I looked over a few hundred suggestions at Linux Mint, but it unsurprisingly wasn't covered. Thank you very much for the Chrome suggestion. I tried it briefly years ago but deep sixed it because its Google. I'll...

    Tired of Windows

Infotech in Federal (we luv the federales around here) Way(15 miles away) built it for me. It took less than twenty four hours! It probably helped when I told them that Saturday was the only really comfortable day to pick it up. They had no problem installing no OS on it. Truth be to tell my...

    Tired of Windows

Tired of M$ to the bone for far too long. Typing this from my brand new only-Linux machine, I'm overjoyed to say. Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon yee-hah! Life can actually be good! Linux Mint is so much easier to install than SuSE of a ~decade ago, me very happy!!! Thank you all so very much for your...

Apple VS. US Goverment? Who should win?

The gummint is pressuring Apple to do something that's patently un-Consitutional. What a singular situation--I sincerely wish.

    Need help justifying a decision

Thank you mrdeathjr28, that's a lot of helpful benchmarks! I love AMD after their two year long performance lead over The Giant Empire with "Sledgehammer." Stood out in the cold for hours trying to win one for free, and bought one eventually. I hope that Zen is a great performance leap...

Federal Trade Commission slams Butterfly Labs for $39M [tl;dr: they'll never pay up]

It's typical of the two tier justice, ahem, system to take so long to decide in favor of the "little guy." The "people" at Butterfly Labs had two entire years to skate away into the sunset.

Mint website hacked, check your .iso downloads

Thank you very much for letting us know about this, ThunderRd. I'm glad that the Mint folks let everyone know in such a timely fashion!

Thank you for looking at my amended parts list, Daniel~. Seems OK to me, but what do I know? I'm glad that your old Enlite case is cool for a modern EATX mainboard, Gizmo! I do know that Win7 "rocked" once upon a time but I can not recommend it to anyone any longer. MS is definitely up to their...

Need advice Distro needed, no gaming needed.

Windows 7 (which is probably very close to Win10 right now--in terms of snooping and tattling features) is a drag. MS is "subtly" making it clear that "I want Win10 for sure." My butt.

Need advice Distro needed, no gaming needed.

As requested, I updated my list of components on PAGE 6 with price info and a couple of changes in parts. As I haven't ordered it yet, I can't give firm info on what the total will be, but I'm guessing that Infotech in Federal Way may want up to $150 to build the box. Upgraded Monitor FWIW
