You can install OpenJDK 8 from a PPA repository
Follow these steps to update OpenJDK:
Open Terminal
Ctrl+Alt+T
Add PPA

When I have used Ubuntu 14.04 or Mint 17, OpenJDK is already installed. I think its version 7
