I think the Steam version is the only available version right now.
The main reason I avoid Steam is because some of the updates can break Wine.

My parents were teachers and could bring Macs home from time to time. so I would try to play Hexen and Doom on Mac. Thats all I had at home before college. Otherwise I was mostly playing Super Nintendo and Playstation :(
