Delayed 7 times, and 4 months late, Fedora 18 is finally out. As most already know, F18 was delayed due to the rewrite of Anaconda (the installer) and the creation of the new update tool, FedUp.

Yes, it still defaults to Gnome 3 (ugh).

Some of the comments I've seen are positively gushing with praise. I'd accuse the reporters of being paid shills, except that this is Linux.

Some Gush at the drop of a dime...
"Dime: a monetary sum of little significance...."

    But Linux remains

When we don't have two nickel to rub together, you can still boot a new destro to pass the time...

If your so inclined to try it, let me know if it's worth a look...oh hell it's always worth a look! LOL

I'm telling you, once I go all Mint with all of my computers, I will be using Fedora for my gaming machine.
Fedora rocks! Its even more stable than Mint

But you never know, gaming has been known to spark changes in computer technology.
If Ubuntu continues to be the favored gaming platform, I may have to stick with Mint.
At least I'll use Fedora on my new server, once I boot it up and plug it in.

Did I tell you that I'm running Fedora 18 on my new server!
I got it setup almost exactly like my old server.
The only problems I'm having is installing 32-bit libraries for Game Servers.
This is new to me! Fedora doesn't install commonly used 32-bit libraries for you, instead I have to find them and install them one at a time

I've read that Cinnamon, Unity, Gnome3, Mate will all work on different distro's
You just have to install it and enable it.
I'm happy with Cinnamon too, so I'm sticking with Mint for gaming

Hows Fedora doing with Nvidia drivers, have they made it so that they can be installed by the gen pop without going to any trouble?

You have to install the rpm-fusion repos, and then yum install akmod-nvida (which will require kernel-headers and kernel-devel and gcc)

    So..., still a pita... when will they ever learn? Doesn't Fedora ever ask herself why I left her for Mint? ":O}

not so bad for us Linuxers... not as easy as Mint, but I've done it enough times that I don't mind either.
Its just updating is a pain... cause you have to do the same steps over and over for every update.
Ubuntu and Mint got it right!

Actually, if you install akmod-nvidia, updating the drivers is handled automagically (I mean, rebuilding the drivers for a new kernel; that's why akmod requires the dev stuff to be installed).

Daniel, we've covered this ground before. Redhat have to walk a delicate line; their corporate existence depends on the goodwill of the FOSS community, which will pretty much evaporate if they start including proprietary drivers.

Fedora isn't widely used on the home desktop anyway, so to be brutally honest, your opinion is irrelevant.

Fedora's primary purpose is as a test-bed for new technologies for Redhat Enterprise Linux. To that end, it is a more developer oriented distribution, and more focused on heavy-iron applications. Built-in support for proprietary drivers takes a back-seat to stability and Enterprise-ready features.

Said a different way, you are bitching that with Fedora you have to buy the chrome wheels install them yourself, while with Mint they are included. If that's a deal-breaker for you, use Mint.

Fedora has its purpose, and it fulfills that purpose rather well. That its purpose doesn't fit your need, well, that's why there are other distros. I find it suites MY needs better than anything else I've tried (including Mint, Debian, and Ubuntu, and even Gentoo, when we are talking about the desktop). When it no longer suites my needs, I'll no doubt move to something else.

I had to save then edit to get any thing up! after a paragraph or three I look up and it's all gone! Can't finger why? Is there a key on my keyboard I might be hitting by accident that erases everything but maybe a half sentence at the start of my post?
