Three Trails Taiko Performance

So, Joplin had JoMoCon today, and one of the featured attractions was the Three Trails Taiko Group from Kansas City.

Wow! Watching it on youtube is one thing (here's a video from a performance they did in March:

)

But being there in person and FEELING the power of the drums is just so much BETTER!

After the show they let me take some pictures, and even gave me a chance to get pictured with the drums:


They also posed for a group picture:


The had a segment during the show where they had audience members come up and gave a quick little training seminar where we got a chance to bang on the drums.

All in all, IT WAS A BLAST!

Definitely! Quite apart from the visceral impact of live drums, a video never truly captures the performative aspects - just how the drummers move, communicate and knit the sound together.

Although a different style and tradition, I've been to a few New Year performances where there were a couple of dozen tanggu being played - just, controlled thunder.
