No, maybe it's not called 'google-chrome'. I'm not 100% sure, since I do not run your distro. I was just guessing. After looking it up, though, I think I know what it's called now.

    Try:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall google-chrome-stable

If that does not work, try searching for the package:
    Code:
    apt-cache search chrome
    Let's see what it's called.

    Thanks ThunderRd!
Hmm, your first command line entry seemed to do the trick. Yay! The response lines said:

Sorry, didn't know what was most pertinent. Now processing trigger to shoot self in head after all of that extremely careful typing. Just kidding! Haven't had any guns for decades.

Should I reboot after all of that updating, or is that only a MS thing?

    Thank you Mr ThunderRd!

    Well done!
It was not an easy birth, yet yielded a full born copy of Mint 17.3 with George's name on it!!

You have done a mountain, make that two mountains of work to help this unworthy one. Thank you, thank you, thank you very, very much Sir ThunderRd!
I very obviously couldn't have fixed what was to me a quagmire of Linux Mint 17.3 troubles without your infinite patience and beyond regular human endurance in helping this pita neophyte. Health, wealth and happiness to your family forever!

Of course no reboot was needed, I was a user of unmentionable OS's for far too long. I beg your collective forgiveness everyone!

Yes, long lists of things happening take place in Terminal if you ask it to politely. I have good (and expensive of course) bandwidth so Terminal rips through lots of work. You're right, Daniel~!
Unlike a corporation from hell whose updates used an extremely small swath of my bandwidth and took forever and a day. @^%&*#! bahstages!

    Yaaaay Linux!!

George..Mint in a HUGE place with endless nooks and crannies. but NOT, NOT I'd say, for the most part, NOT a complicated place.

if you don't let your self be tempted by untested and unproven sources, it's really pretty hard to go wrong in mint...

Just stay out of terminal without an adult present..Terminal will do anything root user asks of it...there in lies the problem! LOL

Everything is negotiable except the price they are unreasonably ridged about price!
Doors are opening for you George!
I know because they keep on keeping on opening for me.';o]

Daniel, you're spreading a leeeettle bit of FUD here.

Lots [most, I would say] of things users do in terminal aren't done as the root user. For example, anything in your home user directory [~]. You don't have to be root to do file manipulations there, list directories, copy, and move stuff around. No sudo or root terminal is needed for that. Yes, a user can make mistakes and bork something, but using common sense will avoid obvious mistakes. I mean, don't delete or a file because you don't recognize it, don't move scripts out of ~, and basically don't touch it if you don't know what it is. If you want to find out what something is or does, ask here, and we can help you.

Other things must be done as the root user, like updates, installations of software, and file movements or edits in /etc or /var.

Remember that sudo is a one-shot: it is only good for one command. After that command runs, the next command runs as normal user, so it's safe because you have to sudo EVERY command individually. It makes you *think* before acting.

Running a root terminal is different, though. [That means the prompt looks something like root@mycomputer: ~# The crunch/hash sign (#) is the giveaway]

If you have a terminal like this open, you DO have to be careful because EVERY command you run, runs as root. Don't do this unless we direct you to, because it could be dangerous in the wrong hands. If you follow what I said before, it differs from sudo because it isn't just one-shot; the open root terminal is permanently root. [But typing 'exit' takes away the root privs]

I will do my very best to stay out of Terminal unless there's a very good reason to open that little ominous black window. And then I'll proceed EXTREMELY carefully. Where would I be without ThunderRd's stellar assistance? It'd be nearly a miracle if I could post here at all!

FUD used to nearly be a middle name of mine many years ago. I'm still subject to bouts of Henny Pennyish fits of fancy now and again, but usually not regarding things computational. Whew!

Read T.R.'s post and you will see why "I" at lest require the presence of an adult!
    Kidding aside I do grow incrementally more comfortable with terminal.":O}

    Also I just realized I left out n all important "NOT" in the first line of my last post... which drew such bitter criticism from T.R.! ":O}

It is SO nice not to see that attention grabbing red "x" on top of the the Synaptic Tray Icon. Thank you ThundrRd!
Dan~, as the hidden voice on the Arsenio Hall Show used to say once in a while, "sho you right!"

    My favorite along those lines...
A movie about two black boys growing up poor and rough.
Bothers. The younger idolizes his older brother Raymond and wants to be Raymond in all things.

Following him about backing Raymond up at every turn.
No matter what Raymond say his younger brother is always there with a

"You right Ray Ray You Right!
For me me it was portrayed in a way that left no doubt that Ray Ray was and always would be... right.
    Brothers...sigh.

I've torn apart entire Linux installations just to get rid of "One red X" somewhere!
Amazing really. MILLIONS of things going well and I fixate on one little thing that's not doing what I think it should.

    Mint!
You spoiled this child and taught him to seek perfection!

Thinking about it, I'm no doubt spoiled my Linux Mint 17.3. But is that a bad thing? Probably, sigh.

Glad that we grok what "sho, you right" means, Daniel~. But...but what about "grok?" No doubt if you're a child of the sixties! Am I dating myself? Surely not! Wasn't there some dialogue in the book about "what color is that house?"
"It's white...on the side that we can see," came the reply, or sumpthin' like that.
This is in aid of? Shuh, I don't know.

    Hineland (sp?)
"A Stranger in a Strange Land" He also wrote "Dune" and quite a few others.

The joke here is that Hineland was a right wing Goldwater fan in the early 60's and going no where...

Until we liberal hippy punks decided his books at lest were "where it's at!"
    I don't know if he ever allowed himself to be corrupted by his fan base.":O}

    Umm......couple of corrections.

His name is Robert A. Heinlein.

He did NOT write 'Dune', that was Frank Herbert. As far as I am concerned, Herbert was a hack; Heinlein was a true writer. I think I've read about everything he wrote at one point or another. Off the top of my head:

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
    Have Spacesuit, Will Travel
    Starship Troopers
    Stranger in a Strange Land
    Red Planet
    Farmer in the Sky
    The Number of the Beast
    Friday
    Job: A Comedy of Justice
    Glory Road
