I think that "service drops" are supposed to dip into a "U," at least at the place of business or dwelling end. This greatly helps to keep rainwater away from the service joltage. Even though this great land is imho gradually becoming a third world country, my copy of the 1978 edition of the National Electric Code says that "U's" are mandatory. Maybe I shouldn't crow about this, maybe standards have slackened since then? Too bad the photo can't convey how much brighter the sun is in Thailand than here in Seattle. Not to mention that it will beat your head and shoulders like a gong come late July. At least it did long ago in that beautiful yet nearly destroyed country to your east. Do you have spectacular sunsets in your neck of the woods? In the central coastal region of The Socialist Republic of Viet Nam the sunrises were boring and colorless. Sunsets were a different saga. Holy mackerel, such colorful beauty was truly breathtaking. The sunsets over the mountains of Laos were indescribably glorious. Twilight in the tropics lasts a short time, maybe such spectacular sunsets simply aren't permitted in the temperate latitudes?
Some credit must be given. In the pic of the steps the back of a warning sign plus two orange traffic cones guarding a pile of wood can be seen and a 7-11 sign brings a warmth of feeling about that wunnerful Southland Corporation. And the grating beyond the white line marking the edge of the road is set to keep passing bicycle tires from falling into it. Something that you can't always count on here in the US. Perhaps locals are smart enough to stay away from electric wires? Dunno if this is true on our side of the Pacific.
Apparently the story is that a contractor was engaged to build a 50m flyover for pedestrian traffic. Because the wait for the provincial electric people to remove and relocate the pole became too lengthy, he decided that rather than wait, he would begin to build the bridge anyway. He claimed that waiting would have put him behind schedule. Go figure.

But, as usual, the importance of the fix was determined by 'face', a completely foreign concept to most Westerners. The governor 'personally' ordered the work done, more for relieving the embarrassment than for the potential safety issues.
Wow, just wow... went ahead and built the steps around the electrical post??? Contractors here in US would have a "COW" over that.

A pedestrian walkway over a busy road is most civilized. It's good to see that people's safety is important in Thailand. The electrical service is shown to be not as concerned as it should have been. Glad that saving face saved the day!

I just have to think that there may be something missing in the explanation... Could the pole contractor have had previous dealings with the concrete contractor? Did this really all come about over a single dispute over timing? I"m wondering if there's a woman involved somewhere in this? How do the Thai feel about sharing girl friends? ":O}
"Missing in the explanation?" Seems that truthful reporting is a very rare occurrence 'round here. And from the other side of the world? The Shadow knows? If only heaven forfend Flint has a lead problem in their water supply. I keep seeing that more than a few American municipalities have serious lead levels in their drinking water. Seems that there are sneaky methods to find less lead than is really there. And plenty of lead, arsenic and whatever goes unreported. It's just easier that way, correct you crooked bahstages?
Alas, I fear the water wars have yet to really get started. But point of the spear is already unsheathed and really ugly. I've done my best and have to admit I don't begin to grasp the enormity of it! What will we do when our "enemy" is fighting for just a sip of "our" water? Who is our brother when we and they must re-learn the lessons of thirst? These are my thoughts as I sit, "Waiting for a miracle, waiting for a change in the hearts of men."
Climate change doesn't seem to benefit anyone. Last summer our nearby Rain Forest (temperate zone rain forests are very rare) burned like crazy. So drought has caught up with us. Very unsettling in the land of 'it used to rain all the dang time.' Seattle's tap water still tastes very good. No comparison to San Francisco's--not to mention the stuff that they call water that the unfortunate people in LA are stuck with. It tasted like a chemical factory forty years ago. It has to be worse now. Yuck, squared! And Canada burns like mad. Scary.
It seems that more and more every little thing I encounter in one way or another, keeps re-telling me the story of planetary change. Just not yet the change I've spent my life in waiting for. It is not so much what we do that has led us here, but what we are. To one of nature's self appointed interpreters nature's message to us is clear. "Change or die. Change now, I will wait no longer. Change or be changed. These are your only choices." How will we chose to change?
Wouldn't it be great if we demanded that fluoride be removed from Seattle's water supply? A change that every knowledgeable person would applaud. It doesn't help people's teeth in the long run and according to some histories was first introduced to concentration camp water by the Nazis. Were they concerned that people who they hated had less cavities? No, they wanted to keep the prisoners docile. Europeans don't put it in their water. Sodium fluoride is a poisonous industrial waste. Rather than having them pay a lot to dispose of it safely, we pay them for the privilege of dulling our brains. Duuh...genius!
