@George; I didn't know you actually went through with the updating; the 3 commands I gave you to help me to troubleshoot won't help anymore if the updates are finished.

Next time, as I said in post #6: before an upgrade like this, you can use the -s switch after the apt-get command first, so we can see what apt wants to do, and preempt any potential problems. If everything looks kosher, then you can go ahead, and the risk of breaking is minimized.

For now, is everything working, or are there problems to solve? You mentioned something about nvidia. Have you rebooted?

To check your current kernel version, type 'uname -a' in a terminal, but you would also have to reboot for that, and I don't know if you've done that or not.

I truly would like to, but I don't use Mint or Debian, and there's just enough difference that I wouldn't be comfortable recommending something at this stage. I think Thunder's got you though.

More clear now, thank you very much ThunderRd! Hmm, don't remember customizing any config file. Just 'cause I don't remember doesn't mean that at least one or two of them didn't "customize themselves" along the way. If everything seems to be running fine does this mean that I don't need to worry about them? Who could be so lucky, sorry for the silly Q.

Thanks a million, Gizmo! Glad that you don't need to spend time on this. Be good,

    "uname -a" brings "Linux" my id "4.4.0-generic #132~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 9 21:46:42 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux"
Not sure if nearly all updates are tagged "Ubuntu." Mighty few if any say "Mint."

Pretty sure I was using an earlier kernel than "4.4.0-109 generic" but know nothing(highly unusual) about "#132~14.04.1 Ubuntu SMP" etc.

Ok, so do a sync like this [as root]:

    apt-get update

    then

    apt-get dist-upgrade -s

Copy and paste the output of the second command here. Don't worry about anything happening; it won't. We can take a look at what it wants to do. In most cases apt is pretty smart.

OMG, pease don't tell anyone--but I forgot how to change to "root." Nah, don't bother, I'm obviously beyond repair.

Just use 'sudo' + the command I gave you, and enter.

The system will ask you for your root password.

George, you can go ahead and do that. Same command, without the '-s'

When it's done, you must reboot.

When you come up, show me 'uname -r'

I saw some Error messages about that and this and "place name not happenin' man" or such like during the the latest "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" without the -s.
After reboot "uname -r" gets me "4.4.0-111 - generic" .

Thank you TR, surely couldn't have done it without major help from you!

That is the latest long-term kernel available from Mint ATM, so it looks like you've succeeded. To check, run the two commands in post #6 again, and show me the output from the second one.

Thank you so much for your help, TR! Your patience with this idiot is beyond the call of duty. Thank you!

Erp, "done" may be a bit unnerving. I'll take it the right way. I hope.
