Gothic 2 Gold - Night of the Raven locks up computer

Hey folks!

Here are my specs:

Operating SystemXubuntu 14.04.4 LTS
Processor2x Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU N2815 @ 1.86GHz
Memory4024MB (866MB used)
Resolution1366x768 pixels

Game crashes after say 10-20 minutes play usually requiring a hard reboot.
Any suggestions?
 
Can you post the entire Debug from PlayOnLinux? Before and after the crash.

There is a bit of information here on WineHQs
 
I have not experienced any issues myself with this game. Have you tested any other games on your system that are at least moderately graphics intensive?

Are you sure that the system is fully locked up? If you are able to switch tty by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 or F3 or F4 then it might just be Wine, or X that has locked up.

I have partly solved some of the problems by setting Offscreen Rendering mode to fbo and setting Render target mode lock to readtex.

I think it may be more of an issue with Pulse audio as when the computer locks up the sound is caught in an endless loop and I have to hard boot.

Mind you last time I was playing and there was a freeze I ran PlayOnLinux via the terminal and was able to get out without a reboot although wineserver refused to terminate or be killed so I rebooted from the desktop anyhow.
 
I've also read Strict Draw Ordering can fix graphical errors/artifacts. Like in Prototype.

I rarely have to reboot the system in order to fix a crashed game. If you use the Virtual Desktop you can Ctrl+Alt+arrowkeys to switch to another workspace and then kill the game or executable.

If that doesn't work, I have to use TTY and do a killall command
 
Either copy the entire log and post it here. You can also upload it to your post. But keep in mind that this website will not accept .log files, so instead rename the file to have a .txt extension, then you can upload it here.
 
Heres the logfile for Gothic II - Gold Edition. I need to point out that nothing would of been recorded when the computer crashed as a hard reboot was required which I think I have fixed by running POL via the terminal.

Are you playing Gothic through Steam or it is the GOG version or Retail version?
Make sure your PlayOnLinux is updated to: 4.2.10

Those errors in the debug are pretty strange. I don't remember seeing these before:

Try installing the package: directx9
 
I never needed to install directx9 myself for this game, but it might be worth a try.

I do notice you have a lot of additional libraries installed. Personally I have only used very few libraries along with this game:
  • gdiplus
  • directmusic
  • disablecrashdialog.

I've played the game for hours without issues. But you also seem to run the game on very minimal hardware. The minimum requirements for the game do not mention requiring a dedicated gpu, but things are a little different on Linux. Integrated graphics on Linux are not known for performing well with games so there is always the chance that this is the root of your issue.
 
It seems to me that any game I try crashes and freezes! I have tried Fallout, Fallout 2, Gothic, Gothic II Gold and they all eventually crash (anywhere between 5-15 minutes). So how can I discover if this is a pulse audio or a graphics card issue?
 
Do you have all of the 32-bit libraries installed?
Just trying to cover all the bases...
 
It is highly unlikely that PulseAudio would cause a crash. Nothing in your log indicate it either. There is of course the option to set PulseAudio up to use dmix, which means PA is not grabbing your hardware directly. However, and PulseAudio issues I have ever heard of were simply garbled sounds and never full freezes of the X server.

I am worried it is your hardware that can't keep up, because your hardware is most definitely not suited for playing games. Actually, you may want to check the system logs when one of those crashes happen. I am not sure what logs Ubuntu keeps, but I suspect /var/log/syslog or /var/log/kern.log. I honestly don't know all the logs found on Ubuntu since my distribution only use journald. But syslog, kern.log are hopefully useful. You may want to check /var/log/Xorg.log as well.

For those logs to be useful, they need to be checked right after one of those crashes.

I failed to mention that I have used POL with success in Gothic III, LOTRO, without having the problems I am having now...
 
What? Your Wifi was causing your computer to crash?
 
No. If you read what I stated that I was originally using Xubuntu 14.04 (64-bit) but I reinstalled with Xubuntu 14.04 (32-bit) which resolved the problem of crashing! Yes the wifi can disrupt my sound just like a an update can also cause a game to crash occasionally. Sorry I thought I had made that clear.

I just never experienced these type of symptoms with 64 vs 32 and sound/wifi
