I had no idea there was a MintBox in development and available on Amazon???

Its very pricey, but compact, passive cooling and fairly small desktop. Kinda reminds me of the SteamBox setup...

At those prices it's hardly a Linux box, more a amazon box.

What is the purpose of these "Mint Boxes?" Surely you can build your own small form factor machine for less? Or am I missing something?

I think they are response to SteamBox where you can buy your own gaming machine with Mint pre-loaded.
The more expensive one has a video card included.

But it doesn't game very well. Handles video and online movies just fine, but its too small for a full size video card. It can do a bit of low quality gaming and online browser gaming, but it gets really hot.

The MintBox is probably more suited for gaming and media viewing. I admit its pretty expensive and CompuLab has some other small form factor options here:
