My bad! I don't know what possessed me! I'm all for compatibility layered or otherwise!

FYI

As we open this topic I think we should note that in Mint 14 we are currently at Wine Version 1.5.21.
As wine is being Constantly updated by "Mint updates" it is of import to know which wine "System" is using as we set up games.

In some methods of installing games this can be of real importance as some games fail if the right Wine is not found.

We can use this topic to alert one another to new Wine releases.

I honestly don't use just one version of Wine
Its because the newest version doesn't always guarantee the previous games to work.
For example: Steam only seems to work in Wine 1.4.1
I have tried using Steam with newer versions of Wine and none of the fonts appear. I have always installed the tahoma package, but still doesn't display fonts.

Instead I use recommended Wine versions from WineHQ.org community posts on the specific game.
Then I'll download the Wine I want in PlayOnLinux. With PlayOnLinux I can always revert back to my default Wine or try another one.
So simple it hurts to admit it

As I have a newer graphics card I've found myself in a bit of difficulty. Wine earlier than 1.5 don't recognize my Graphics card, not always a deal killer, but an added aggravation at times. After 1.5 WINE my card is recognized for what it is.

This being the case I start with the recommended wine, if it works swell, If not I search though newer wines and "usually" get what I want.":O}

Very good point!
And, Wine will probably never make those older versions support your card either.
But as far as you could tell, wasn't it only Steam that showed the wrong card specs?
I bet other retail games will work with older versions of Wine as long as you stick to Direct X 9 games.

Actually it's a Wine thing. Wine before 1.5 simply doesn't know my crd exits. It will use most of my cards capabilities in some games, in others It forces the lowest settings, sometimes I can successfully over ride them and some times doing so is a mess, slow downs, flickering and the like.

But If I can get a newer wine to run, I usually get all the perks of my card that the game is capable of.

The exception is the before mentioned DX10 and DX11. Wine hasn't caught up with 10 and 11 yet and so they are ignored as far as I can tell leaving DX 9 to carry the day.

Arg!
Thats not good news...
As you have already noticed, some games won't work in newer versions of Wine and we are forced to use an older version.
There seems to be a backwards compatability issue with certain games and we are stuck with the old Wine.
If your card won't work with older Wine versions, then the list of games will get smaller.
My card is not as new as yours but is still not even one year old. I have not seen a lot of issues with this.
So far most of my games work. Old and new. I just use the recommended Wine from PlayOnLinux and if it doesn't work I try the newest one or the most reliable 1.4.1

I think this is just the lay of the land for us. We will be juggling with these things until Native Linux games arrive in mass.

I can live with this.":O}

For now I can live with this too.
When I start upgrading and building new machines I may have to finally eliminate some games from the list.

You know, Windows isn't all that different. Most games still run in XP but some games require an emulator like DOS Box.
The cool thing with PlayOnLinux is you can quickly configure Wine to run like Windows 95, XP, Vista and 7
I'm sure Windows 8 will soon be on that list too

Wine 1.5.22

Mint 14 updated my Wine today. So if you aren't running Mint, but are running Wine we have a new vintage.

Mint doesn't update my Wine at all.
Instead I have been checking PlayOnLinux for new versions of Wine

You're slow :)

I've had that update for two whole days already in Gentoo.
And by god I should have realized I would be! Mint after all prides itself on being a bit behind the curve to insure stability.

But still... a simple "Oh! Really! I didn't know that!" would have satisfied me more...LOL

I'm sure you know this, but for the record, it's WINE that let's you configure for OS...Using POL we sometimes forget wine is at the heart of all we do! ":O}

yeah I forget because PlayOnLinux utilizes everything Wine has to offer.
I forgot to put "configuring Wine" in my last post. Its integrated into PlayOnLinux... which of course, is just Wine

Yeah, Wine is the meat, but PlayOnLinux put a very tasty bread and butter on top

Linux gamers owe a lot of people for a lot of stuff, Wine and POL seem to top the list! ":O}
