Then stick your doubt into your poke, Holy smoke this ain't no joke! ":O} During the depression bums called their parcel of belongings a poke. But I think the phrase "a Pig in a poke "predates the1920s.The term a pig in a poke indicated a hidden unknown value. The buying a pig in a poke was to take a chance on the unknown as the pig cannot be seen. Oh ye of little faith! LOL
Speaking of artists, the Ricky Lee Jones song that you posted in Gizmo's thread is amazing. I had no idea that the woman can be so deep. Thank you for posting it! Maybe it will help Chris, he is facing one of life's hardest of all situations. I hope and pray for the best for him and his family.
But the Depression caused millions of people to be "bums." Oh, glorious Capitalism, I'm sure that more of the same will be a bonanza for the very few.
You having proven yourself worthy Here she leaves the merely deep and goes all out Mystical! Flying Cowboys Rickie Lee Jones Down there by the river is a man Whose horn is twisted into shapes Unknown to the wicked and the wise And he bears the look of an animal Who's seen things no animal should ever see He has been driven beyond all towns And all the systems until now though it is Long past too far he keeps going Because it's a desert Because he's a desert We come to the river We'll walk away from all this now We come to the water We'll walk away from all this now She first saw him he was standing in the doorway Illuminated from behind by a light Though imaginary posses chased them To these distant adobes Standing on the cliffs today I thought I saw you below My shadow growing smaller It's a desert because Because it's a desert They'll be asking me about you forever I guess We come to the river We'll walk away from all this now We come to the water We'll walk away from all this now Long coats on the prairie Lying in the dust Who can I turn to ? Who can I trust ? Were you walking on the water ? Playing in the sun ? But the world is turning faster Than it did when I was young When I was young When I was young Oh, when I was young I was a wild, wild one
Ricky wrote this one. Just really like these lyrics, clever but soulful...":O} The Last Chance Texaco Rickie Lee Jones A long stretch of headlights Bends into I-9 Tiptoe into truck stops And sleepy diesel eyes Volcanoes rumble in the taxi And glow in the dark Camels in the driver's seat A slow, easy mark But you ran out of gas Down the road a piece Then the battery went dead And now the cable won't reach... It's your last chance To check under the hood Last chance She ain't soundin' too good, Your last chance To trust the man with the star You've found the last chance Texaco Well, he tried to be Standard He tries to be Mobil He tried living in a world And in a shell There was this block-busted blonde He loved her - free parts and labor But she broke down and died And threw all the rods he gave her But this one ain't fuel-injected Her plug's disconnected She gets scared and she stalls She just needs a man, that's all It's her last chance Her timing's all wrong Her last chance She can't idle this long Her last chance Turn her over and go Pullin' out of the last chance Texaco The last chance Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Rickie Lee Jones
I missed the majority of her material for many years. I wasn't crazy about "Chuck E's In Love" and imagined that that was the way she was for years thereafter. It's nice to be wrong many times more than I usually admit to. Thank you Dan, these are great songs!
A few words from the Lady in question... I love the absence of theatrics and drama. Just a nice lady striving to save all that can be saved.
My personal favorite RLJ song: 'The Horses'. It was written by RLJ and the always brilliant Walter Becker, one of the Steely Dan geniuses, allegedly for her daughter - telling her that she would always be there for her. Becker was the album's producer as well. A true gem in her body of work:
She's a very interesting artist. I listen to very little music in my old age, the best of it grabs my emotions too much. I can't find the lyrics for this tune. As I understand none of them the emotional thrust of this song seems to be lighthearted about a very dark subject. Hope I'm wrong about that.
Thanks for posting this Daniel. I watched the whole thing, I like her far more than I previously thought.
When woman speaks to daughter a bridge is crossed... "A virgin can no more understand a mother than a mother can return to being a virgin" This a favorite of mine as well
We are beyond believably fortunate to be alive when these four amazingly talented musicians did and do their stuff. Breathtakingly talented and so much more. Thank you for this post!!
