    Beats " hey you"...,barely.
    Could you not go so far as to name them:

    Brian 1- A - typical computer namer, for sure!
    Brian 2-B -widely condemned for his negligence, numerical and alphabetical!
    Brian 3-C - how much trouble you can get into pushing poor helpless commuters about!

    You just can't think of a name can you!? That's it isn't, it's the only possible explanation!!
    Well shoot man...Ask your kids for help! If you can remember their names... ":O}

    Your Busted BOO! LOL

    You didn't get a new hard drive?
    Are you dual-booting Windows/Linux or are you going all-out Linux?

    I got a new hard drive (small 500 GB drive for laptop) 5 days before I bought the new mobo, cpu, ram and video card.
    Im only running linux ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Nvidia drivers now - NO WINDOWS IN MY COMPU NOW.-
    But I had another 500 GB drive, a second one, for all my files that was like 5 years old. I wanted to add it to the new build but it was impossible cause everytime i try to plug it my new compu went crazy and lagged like hell. So I decide to unplug that second HD.
    Right now i got myself an USB drive from one of my boys (its a Verbatim 500gb) - It working without any problems so far.
    The bad thing is that I MUST recover all my files from the old, problematic drive before sending it to the trash can.

    Did you yank the USB drive out of the case and put it in the computer?

    It would make for much faster disk access if you installed that hard drive in your box, connected to the motherboard port along with the other sparkling new goodies!
    Oops, I failed to notice that it was a USB drive and not an internal drive. Sorry, my mistake. Please ignore the first sentence!

    Very nice collection of components! By the way, 500 Gb HDD capacity is just fine for Mint 17.3. I have the same and my drive is nearly empty, with major room to spare.
    It's only my unlearned opinion, but I've decided to install only Mint Cinnamon 17.3 "automagic updates" that are rated 1 through 3. Maybe those nagging 5 rated Linux kernel development and firmware for Linux kernel drivers are important. But after many years of MS deception and nowadays plain flat out barefaced thieving I have a level of mistrust of low rated updates. I could be wrong, plenty of folks may say so.

    Hi lorena, Can you plz list the specific AMD A series apu that you have? I ask because the A8 comes with a built-in, on-board HD 6550D, That's why it's considered a APU and not a CPU. APU means GPU & CPU built into one chip.

    Seems as if the HD 6550D destroys the gt 610, Question is how well does linux support the, radeon HD 6550D

    http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-6550D-IGP-vs-GeForce-GT-610

    Hmm. Well I have been doing this along time and I can only give advise as to what I would do.

    If it is the case that your apu is stronger then your gpu and the apu is supported in linux. I would not install the gpu I would try to take it back and get my money back for it.

    I have found over the years that no video card from invidia is worth it's salt unless it comes with a ~120$ price tag. The GTX 750 ti seems to be the one hitting that mark now. My girl has one and it performs well with mint.

    But, And a big but here. I personally would not pair a AMD APU with a true graphics card. For gaming (especially the games wine runs best) I would seek out a CPU with no more then 4 core's and good single core performance.

    ========================================================

    As far as updates go I'm with booman on mint 17.3 my gaming desktop. I install every mint update thrown at me. I even upgraded from 17.2 to 17.3 no problems.

    But this got me into trouble, I had such a great experience with mint updates and upgrades, that when lubuntu 16.04 came out I upgraded a web server to it from 15.10.... And broke every thing.

    Moral of the story don't let mint with it's amazing update/upgrade experience let you get complacent on the dangers of it.

    The box says: A6 7400k - AMD APU w/ Radeon R5 Graphics - 3.9 Ghz Max Turbo - 1MB cache
    6 compute cores (2 CPU + 4 GPU) - Socket FM2 - Includes Heat Sink Fan

    As I understand it has 4 Graphic Cores but I bought the Nvidia Card cause no good ATI Proprietary Drivers for Ubuntu.-
    And about bringing back the video card... THIS IS 3RD WORLD BABY!!!! NO TAKE BACK AND GET YOUR MONEY BACK POLICY HERE!!!!!:p
    You payed and you made a mistake.... Then you are royally screwed. hahahahaha - Anyway was a good joke from your part!!!! :D

    Actually, most USB drives are just a plain SATA hard drive in a fancy case. I would take the SATA drive out of the case and plug it directly into the motherboard. Speeds are pretty high unless you are using USB 3.0, but I think SATA 3 is even faster than USB 3.0

    Very sorry to see you might be running into some compatibility problems Lorena.
    Been there done gone and spent that!

    Oh how my tears use to flow! LOL

    You may not need it, but giving people advice makes me feel important.
    You want me to feel important don't you Lorena? ":O}

    This advice comes to you from my:
    "Nothing can save you now"
    file.

    It's roots lie in a thousand poorly researched or badly considered purchases made while trying to "Buy" the "Right Part"
    to replace or work with the wrong part I just bought.

    Are you sitting down?
    (OK that was a bit melodramatic, sorry!)

    Do Nothing. Wait. Tell your hubby, tell all your on-line friends, and yes you can tell US!
    Let them have a few days to think on the best move you can make now.

    Here's where all that waiting comes in handy.
    You want to be all rested up! You may have to
    E-bay or sell to friends one thing or another to get back on track with your build.

    If your patient and careful to get the best advice you can find
    You can recover from some really really big mistakes without any real harm done.

    As far as advisors go, you've already heard a bit from some of our "local talent".
    infinity8X3 is in a position to lend a strong hand to those in need....?

    Do please let us know how things are going !

    Thank you for letting us know that most USB drives are ordinary HDD's hiding in a case, booman. I hope this means that they are normal drives. I foolishly bought a USB drive years ago thinking that I could use it to transfer data to a new computer. Wrong. The dang thing was only good for backup. Wish I knew that it could be broken out of its case!

    I use a 2T. USB storage and back up external drive. Seems pretty quick, no SSD mind you, but not a pain to back up to either.I find it very handy to have a drive I can just throw stuff onto until I get around to doing a back up. So I get both uses and no bother.":O}

I only need to recover some files from the old HD (btw hubby is already on it on his pc). My websites are ok and everything is working fine. At least for now.... So far I have installed World of Warcraft (vanilla) - Drakensang - Aquaria - Spiral Knights. Just need to wait a lil to get Magicka back and today im going to install RoM again.
