I just hate it when this happens!!

Make that 4 installs...Still no go accessing external drives, not even a USB thumbdrive... Darned if I can even guess what's going on...

"gksu caja" will get me access to my drives in Root. But when I try to transfer music or browser settings it tries to load them in the root partition and runs out of space on a nearly empty drive... earning itself a two thumbs down from me....this is the dumbest distro I've worked with to date and I'm freaking done with it!...on to the next distro!

Thanks for trying to help me with this one...what a pain 4 or more days wasted here just to get access to my own drives!

I've never had problems with Linux auto-mounting my drives.
I did have problems unmounting drives in the past, but thats not related.
A few years later I found that the problem was in the filesystems table (fstab)
Fix it and didn't have a problem again.

HA! I beat it's stupid ASS!! LOL

I reinstalled and gave my entire hard drive to ROOT. Then I just booted to root and treated it like my usual install Works fine with just a few minor differences.
I deleted my Home Dir inside Root as there was no point to having to open Root, Home, Daniel.

root now serves as Home and I login as Root, password. all Most, most importantly I now and have complete access to all my files on my Extension drives.... Only one thing more important than that...

The only reason I use /home as a separate partition is in case Linux gets all screwed up and I have to re-install.
I'll just re-install over root and my /home will stay intact.
I actually had to do it once on my server and was very thankful.

The ridiculously stupid thing is that It installs Nvidia automatically and then has no provision for Wine or to install Play on Linux!

Other than that it might make a rather nice gamers OS":O}

I've set up everything else I use without a single problem, But there is no provision to update software, what you see is what you get!

I'm going to go play with Mint Mate, I'm tried of being frustrated for now,":O}

Dan, I hope I'm understanding correctly what you've done. I really haven't followed this thread, but I think I've caught up now.

Well, you got it to work, and that's good, but it's a two-edged sword. There's a reason that Unix- and Linuxen don't run as root unless it's needed, the main one being security (from others and from yourself).

Applications that now run from your root directory, with root permissions, shouldn't. *Folding at home* is an example of one. There isn't a reason for it to run as root, and its location should be in your /home/user directory. Running it as root, from your /root directory, could very possibly leave your box open to exploits (since the app calls home from there, and that's not a Good Thing.)

I'm sure that there are other examples as well. Kicking its ass, although satisfying from the perspective of finding a work-around for your mounting problem, will most likely create problems down the line, since you are now doing *everything* as root (since you are actually *logging in* as root.) Basically, what it means is, every file that you download to your machine, or create on your machine, will be owned by root, and that is not, in any way, a good scenario.

I'm pretty sure others here will agree that it isn't, so be very, very careful with file manipulations, because when you are root, (as you know) you can delete/move/rename/run/bork/lose/rub_into_your_belly/etc/etc *anything* (without confirmation as well) and the wrong move will plotz your whole installation, or maybe make it unbootable.

In the 5 years or so I've been running Linux, I don't think I've *logged in* as root more than a half-dozen times, and after I did [ONLY] what I had to, I logged out and went in as a normal user. OTOH, I use su - most every day to perform certain tasks, but I'm not logged in as root.

There really has to be a better solution for the automount issue. I don't know why the distro isn't automounting, but there are a number of small automount daemons that you might try. In my Gentoo boxes I use one called udiskie. You might see if it's in your package manager and try it.

Very informative! I thank you for the explanation as well of course for your concern! But once I kicked it's ass I realized that It's a pretty much a closed box! Everything that can be installed is installed and that doesn't include Wine or Playonlinux....Here I mean installed by the package manager or the software manager. So I've dumped it and installed Mint Mate which is ever so much better behaved and seems to enjoy doing what I ask her to do! ":O}
