How do I stop packages from overriding my NVIDIA drivers?

    It's a question that I have had for a while. Apparently when the free drivers installs themselves, they override NVIDIA ones. Thing is, they do it in such way that X still thinks the library is from NVIDIA after I ran the usual driver checkup commands, that and even running the lshw, glxinfo all confirmed NVIDIA driver was installed.

    I reinstalled the NVIDIA drivers back. I had to because whatever the update contained it made my kwin go chocopuffs.

    I assume you are on some debian derivative? I've never had the problem you describe with Fedora.

    Nope. I'm using Debian sid. Some packages from mesa kicked in and somehow ended up overriding my drivers. This is like the second time it happens :/
