Conclusion:
The only problem I experienced was the black screen bug. Using the Task manager to focus the game works fine, but is a bit inconvenient. I tried a few recommended scripts and or console switches, but they didn't work for me. Otherwise, I was able to play Syberia just fine and even save/load without issues. I was unable to run the game full-screen without the virtual desktop because the Task Manager never appears properly to focus the game.
