Sunshine left an indelible memory. of love on a wire, a shock before the fall. First time i heard it, walking barefoot in the dirt beside the road, I deeply missed a young woman I had yet to meet. So long Bill, fair thee well.
I treasure and listen often to many of Iris's songs. She's a deep well and her waters pure. One of my favorites is on her lighter side. I always seem to picture a light spring rain...
Maybe one must be of a certain time, to understand why so much keeps going back to Southeast Asia. Many volunteered more were shanghaied.. The draft pulled many of my fellows out of their lives and we who did not go will always have a troubled look when we look into their eyes. Most of those who went as boys came home and tried to learn to live as men among their memories of tortured death. No one has ever conveyed this to me so well as John.
What a wonderful mess that was. Americans at their very worst, yet there were a handful of great young Americans too. I admired the Doughnut Dollies a lot. Young American women who put their butts on the firing line to be helpful to GI's. They volunteered for dangerous duty without guns to make themselves feel more impervious. They worked for the Red Cross, one "manned" a small trailer near our side of the runway. The doughnuts were less than good and the fruit drinks that came from a giant dairy outfit in Southern California were terrible. But we didn't care about that, it was really nice to be able to talk to these wonderful young women for a minute.
