God, what an incredibly great album. Every song on it is a gem.

I was in high school when 'The Heart of Saturday Night' came out; this was my first exposure to Tom Waits and I remember it dearly.

We al have at least a few songs that over power us because they say to much about our past loves. this is one of mine.
 
50 years after they were written they are still singing his songs, thankfully.
A performance in which the unthinkable happens.
Some failures only raise us up in the hearts of others..":O}

Thank you for posting this! I never knew that this song was this deep before. Tears are appropriate. I think that we now have entered into the time of Hard Rain. Are we lucky? Doesn't feel like it now.
