Panic mode!

Not having been inside my machine in over a year, I went into panic mode when I failed to log in online. Through trial and error I made a judgement call that the modem had failed-for what ever reason.
Not being willing to take the time to diagnose why it had failed (remember panic mode?) I just ordered up a new one! Two day shipping - hurry, hurry! No net-no life!
Two days of pacing my living room later, It arrived and I hooked it up-closed my eyes and booted up- NO NET!!!! Oh God don't do this!
Re-configure the modem? forgot that little detail.
needless to say,running smooth now. Was sweating bullets for a while though over something so simple!
 
Whoa! If that happened to me I would be able to do internet at work... at least.
So it was the modem?

Morning booman. It was the modem. I had to go to my neighbors computer so I could order my new modem- the humility of it all, LOL.
All kidding aside-I could not help but be upset over the fact I couldn't get online. I take being online for granted, rocked my world when it wouldn't hook up. And I wasn't 100% sure it was the modem at fault.
Cost me $100 for the new one, cheep at l/2 the price!
What a relief when everything started running smoothly again!

I moved to my mountain keep around a year and a half ago. As there were Direct TV dishes all over the place We assumed we would have an easy hook up.

We should have asked. Those dishes were a product of Direct TV policy of always saying yes we can.
They send a contract installer out on a promise and then he has to get hook up if he is to be paid.

It took the cooperation of the ntire trailer camp ground to get comcast out here and hook us up.
Just as we were about to admit failure and and start looking for another trailer park:

One of my neighbors sat down at a bar in Emuclaw...the only bar in 35 miles!

He look over and saw a old friend from high school.
He was wearing a Centurylink.net label on his work shirt.
So Todd tells his friend the trouble we were having getting hook up.

Century guy had done well and was the work foreman in our area.

He told Todd "That's bullshit!

A week later he shows up with three trucks and 6 guys and they go to work installing fiber optic to our camp pole and 100MB in copper from the pole to our trailers.

There is no life so fine that internet cannot elevate it...if you've got hook up.":O}

So glad you got yours and I got mine.":O}

Man we were sailing close to disaster, "There but for the grace of God."

Wow, just Wow!
You totally got "hooked up"!!!

I bought my first modem for $85 and thought it was expensive. But that sucker lasted me over 10 years!
I recently replaced it and still spent a lot for that small light-weight piece of plastic.

Why buy your modem?

West coast the service provider (Comcast, Earthlink, Centurylink)
all provide the modem with the service...You CAN buy it or use another 3rd party.
But the modem fee in nominal a couple of bucks a month and We moved about quite a bit especially in the earlier years so it never seemed worth while to buy a modem.

I bought my modem for a couple of reasons- It was the simplest and quickest way to do things. I'm with centurylink and they charge $10 a month to rent the darn thing ( I hate renting!)
$10 to rent vs $100 and I own it. Renting after ten months I have paid but still have to keep paying. No brainier IMHO
 
Yes, losing net access is traumatic. I don't know if my provider Wave Cable is just a front for one of the biggies. My neighborhood is owned by Comcast, but my building is Wave. Who knows what evil lurks in the big communications corporation? Silly question, plenty.
 
I bought my own Modem because Cox makes you return it if you end the service.
So might as well buy one that I can continue using.
Its that "Linux Freedom" in me :)
 
I use an impressive looking wired router. I think it's ten bucks a month, so yeah it's a ripoff. But it won't be my responsibility if it goes bad. One small blessing perhaps.

Oh, by the way DON'T make the mistake of getting a subscription to Wired magazine.
I made the error of responding to one of those polls that asks "How did we do" after buying something online. Wow! I got a free** subscription to Wired for taking that poll. Free as in $5.95 per month plus the free** $2.00 per month charge for the maggotzine. Yes, that's right MAGGOTzine. What a piece of merde! Every other page is an ad for something expensive and who cares what those ****birds have to say about anything?

Not to mention that the number you call to cancel the subscription had the loudest screeching and white noise you'll ever hear. That's the only way to cancel the subscription I so foolishly fell for. I'll be Wired for life. Oh the happiness oh the joy.

Don't "do them a favor" and respond to an after sale poll!

Now I can't even buy Window washer blades anymore. I have to buy the whole blade case (or whatever you call it)
So now they cost $20.00

I can't believe that there are those who wish to buy there way to victory in games.

As soon as they ask for any money beyond what I pay for a game, well I just go back to my game just a bit less pleased with my purchase.

Anyone playing fortenight? What's that all about?
 
Exactly...
I understand the developers need to make a living and a profit. So I am happy to buy their game, but I never purchase a $60.00
I rarely even spend $10.00 for a game.
I wait for a few years for a sale and pick up the game I want.

I won't touch Fortnight.... millions of players? no way!
 
I've been known to backslide into a 16 dollar game, but it made me ashamed. ":O}

Oh well---it's ALL a racket! The window wiper blades don't last at all. Someone figured out how to make them MORE destructible by smog instead of less. Thank you Masters of the Universe!
