And watch Secretariat win a race against the best houses in the country by a truly unbelievable 31 lengths and was still so powered up he ran and another 1/8 of a mile further and broke that record as well. He ran the last 1/8 of a mile just fractions of a second off his first.

Interestingly, 'Phar Lap' *might* come from a Thai word. I'm not *sure* if the horse was named for this, because it's spelled in English, but:
'ฟ้าแลบ' [pronounced 'Far Lahp']
is the Thai word for 'lightning', which would be a fitting name for a fast horse. I wonder if anyone knows the origins of this name in the horse's history. I learned that the horse was born in New Zealand; maybe someone involved in its early life named it.

I've never been to a horse race and truth be known I know very little about them. But here's the thing that I'm amazed
about.
Secretariat Annihilated his competition. What is with a hoarse that being 15 lengths ahead, with no one ahead of him, no one even close to him having spent tons more energy than the pack to do so continuously pulls away from the very best in the country one a previous triple crown winner.
His rider of course let up at the finish, his race won.. But not the horse he charged on to another record breaking 1/8 of a mile.setting another world record before he could be slowed down.
When asked why the jockey kept pushing him the Jockey replied I didn't he was running easy at his own pace.
We get one like this in a lifetime. I can't think of a human athlete who put so much distance between themselves and their competitors.
