Control in Proton

  • 11,125
  • 2
What begins as a corporate espionage turns out to be a paranormal extravaganza! Federal Bureau of Control is a secret government agency experimenting in secret weapons, but something happens and now they are in complete lock down. Play as Jesse Faden and investigate what happened while also discovering your new abilities....

I was able to pick up Control for free on Epic Games. Then I was able to download and play the game in Heroic games launcher without any issues. I even recently picked up a new video card and Control runs pretty well with most settings on high. The video doesn't display the full performance I get in Mint on my GeForce GTX 1650. I've had a few frame rate stutters when indoor (of all places) but the large areas seem to run great. Physics are amazing and do not seem to cause any lag as you destroy everything in sight.

Specs:
Mint 20.2 64-bit
GeForce GTX 1650
Nvidia 470
Proton 7.0

Bloodborne Demake in PlayOnLinux

I never played the original Bloodborn on the Playstation, but this game reminds me of Dark Souls soooo much! The movement, the backgrounds and even the sound effects are just like Dark Souls!

Download Bloodborn PSX for free and customize the graphics to simulate a 1990's CRT television and enjoy the old school hack-n-slash!

https://b0tster.itch.io/bbpsx

I was unable to play this game on stable versions of Wine because of dependencies needed for Unreal Engine.
But I quickly found that staging versions are able to run it almost perfectly! There are some staticy sound artifacts which I tried to fix by installing xact and Direct X June 2010, but it didn't help. So I just dealt with it...

Specs:
Mint 20.2 64-bit
GeForce GTX 1060

Assassin's Creed Unity in Proton

Assassin's Creed Unity takes place in France during the French Revolution. Make your way through the streets alone or with 3 friends and free the lower class from oppression by assassinating key figures in power. Purchase costumes, gear, skills and even co-op boosts to complete the single-player campaign or co-op missions.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/289650/Assassins_Creed_Unity/

Unity runs really well in Linux Mint but there are times when it might randomly crash. Sometimes we had a hard time connecting a co-op session because one computer appeared offline for no apparent reason. Other than that, I was able to crank up the graphics to Very High and still enjoy a decent frame rate. Expect to see "Processing Vulkan Shaders" from time to time.

I was only able to play Unity in E-Proton7-9 (Glorious EggRoll) as other versions would crash UPlay/UConnect

Specs:
Mint 20.2 64-bit
GeForce GTX 1060 & GTX 950

PREY in Proton

PREY is an absolute "Must Play" if you are a first person shooter gamer! Imagine System Shock 2 on steroids with amazing graphics, clever morphing aliens, psionic abilities, loot, crafting, survival, sneaking and more. Of course all happening on a space station! Doesn't get any better than this!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/480490/Prey/

I remember testing PREY crashing a few years ago: reddit
But now it runs beautifully! I was even able to get a decent frame rate while recording and playing! I'm even using the same hardware, but newer Nvidia drivers, Proton, Vulkan and Mint version.

Rise Of The Tomb Raider in Proton

  • 0
Rise Of The Tomb Raider is another epic chapter in the life of Laura Croft. She is searching for the Lost City of Kitezh by following the relics and stories of religious prophet. But a new enemy has risen to beat her to the prize: Trinity

Survive in the frozen mountains climbing death defying cliffs, hunt animals with your bow, loot to craft new upgrades and take out mercenaries with a new throw-able weapon crafting system.

https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/p/rise-of-the-tomb-raider

I was able to install Heroic Launcher and run Rise Of The Tomb Raider with very little issues. At first I had some logging in problems, but waited a day and I logged in just fine. Performance is hit-n-miss with Tomb Raider probably because of Proton/Vulkan Shaders. Any time I initially load a save game it takes about a minute to render the entire map so it will stutter and freeze... but when its done the game runs perfectly with nice frame...

Just Cause 2 in ProtonGE

Just Cause 2 is an explosive open world action game with sandbox vehicular combat and grappling hook fun you can ever have! Hop in any car, truck, helicopter, mortorcycle or plane... and cruise through highways, cities, mountains, oceans to your hearts desire. Oh, and there are all kinds of soldiers and police trying to take you out! Use the grappling hook and parachute on any vehicle to hover above them or grapple two people together with a moving car and see their bodies fly around. The only limitation is your imagination... and maybe ammo too.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/8190/Just_Cause_2/

Just Cause 2 has been one of those problematic games in Wine for years. I would re-test and re-test each year to see if the newest versions of Wine or Proton has finally made it playable. At best it would play but have all kinds of performance issues and graphical glitches. Today, Glorious Eggroll has finally made it playable with...

LET IT DIE in Proton

  • 2,939

LET IT DIE is a free to play 3rd person action survival game with a tournament style game-play. Select a male or female clone and climb the tower by slaying robots, clones and looting their corpse for gear. Eat and store frogs, mushrooms and other stuff to power up or poison yourself. This is a single-player game but almost seems like a multi-player game because you will fight against your previous characters that died.

Apparently this is a survival game but I didn't see very many survival needs... no hunger, water, sleep, or crafting. There is weapon crafting in the lobby and you can customize your characters, but it seems when you die the next start is with a brand new clone with nothing but underwear. Also, most of the levels are flat, so it doesn't really feel like you are climbing a tower until you get to the ladder at the end.

Its pretty fun slaying previous characters and finding new weapons and gear! There is definitely a "souls" style of game-play and its much...

LEGO The Hobbit in Proton

LEGO has an ongoing franchise in re-creating movies as action puzzle games. LEGO The Hobbit follows the story of Bilbo Baggins with humor, boss fights, clever puzzles, LEGO crafting and lots of hack-n-slash action.
Even play through the store co-op with a friend! Graphically this game is absolutely beautiful! I was able to play in HD 1080 and never a performance for frame rate drop.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/285160/LEGO_The_Hobbit/

Proton handles LEGO The Hobbit without any issues. I am able to play right out-of-the-box with keyboard/mouse and my Xbox controller. There were only minor issues in the game that Windows gamers experience as well. Other than that, it is fun, clever and frustrating game like all the LEGO series.

Strange Brigade in Proton

Strange Brigade is a 3rd person action game that places you in a 1930's Indiana Jones in the middle of Egypt. Play through extremely detailed ancient levels of the dead, enjoy fighting zombies, mummies, huge scorpions, bosses and much more. Each level is filled with puzzles, monster slaying and weapon upgrades. The best part... play with 3 of your friends in online co-op.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/312670/Strange_Brigade/

I knew Strange Brigade existed but didn't give it a second thought because of the price. Then one day during a Steam sale I stumbled across it for $5.00 and couldn't miss this chance. Bought two copies and have been playing co-op with my daughter. Proton handles it perfectly on my GeForce GTX 1060, but my daughters machine had some random crashes with her GeForce GTX 950. For me the game runs really smooth but there is also this strange audio syncing where I can hear the sound, voices and music from...

Unreal Tournament 3 in PlayOnLinux

Who doesn't like Unreal Tournament? This classic FPS series that laid the foundation for Sci-Fi action and vehicular battles! Hop in an alien Dark Walker or hover around on a hover-board...
All the classic game types are there:
  • Deathmatch
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Duel
  • Survival
  • Capture The Flag
  • Vehicle CTF
  • Warfare
  • Betrayal and Greed

Unfortunately a native Linux port was never completed. So we have to use Wine to enjoy all the classic Unreal mayhem. PlayOnLinux and Wine handle the game perfectly. I'm not even using DXVK and my GeForce GTX 1060, GTX 950 and 750 Ti handle it perfectly! Even on high settings!

Driver: Parallel Lines in PlayOnLinux

  • 3,428

Driver: Parallel Lines is a GTA inspired roam-the-streets sandbox action game. Like the original Driver games, you will be driving the cities avoiding police and accomplishing tasks or missions. But like GTA, you can exit the vehicle and roam the city and steal whatever car you want. I love all the classic cars from the 1970s and character clothing styles. Even the city had a vintage look and ambiance to it.

https://www.gog.com/game/driver_parallel_lines

Driver runs fairly well in Wine, but there is a bit of stutter as it loads the distant city lines. I was able to use my Logitech MOMO racing steering wheel with force feedback. It handles nicely, but the buttons are a bit confusion to program in the game. Obviously this is not a simulation game, so I dealt with the settings and had fun roaming New York in the 1970s. Unfortunately there are only two camera modes... 3rd person and bumper view. Also, there is no support for...

Metallic Child in Proton

Metallic Child demo is a 3rd person melee action game where you play as a human controlling a mysterious space station battle robot: Rona

At first glance she appears to be an innocent child-like robot, but beneath the skin she packs-a-punch!
Use several skills and melee weapons to destroy enemy bots then combo them together and take out challenging bosses.

The demo on steam is basically an introduction and tutorial to the game. Proton handles it just fine and I was able to play through the entire demo. Once you learn the basics, this is a fast moving action game with a lot of variety and upgrades.

Who doesn't like a good Jack Black movie?
What about a Jack Black heavy metal action tactical game!

Brutal Legend is a combination of the minds from Double Fine and Jack Black creating an epic world of fantasy and 80's heavy metal! Wield your Flying-V against counterfeit cover bands, string-spinning spiders, huge-fist-pounding bouncers and much much more! Team up with metal legends locked into arena rock history and summon your headbanger metalheads to mosh your way through unreal lands of epic METALish stuff.

Spinal Tap would be proud!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/225260/Brutal_Legend/

Double Fine Productions was happy to produce a native Linux version for us and it runs beautifully! My aging GeForce GTX 1060 handles it just fine! A little stutter here and there, but other than that Brutal Legend runs GREAT! And its a lot of fun! Takes me back to grade school where I first heard Anthrax and Metallica...

Monster Hunter Rise Demo in Proton

  • 2,474

Monster Hunter Rise is the next installment of the hunting series...
Select a class like an axe, sword wielding character or a gun slaying character and many more... then ride your wolf around the massive map searching for elements to craft traps and poisons. Once you find a monster, TAKE IT DOWN or mount it if possible and use its own body weight to smash them into the environment.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1446780/MONSTER_HUNTER_RISE/

Proton was able to handle Monster Hunter Rise demo very well. I left all the settings on normal which included HD textures and most settings on high. The screenshots are kinda crappy because the stinking HUD is so large, but the environment and animation is top notch! Each creature has a purpose and the monsters roam around freely. Unfortunately when I tied to play co-op with my daughter there was a HUGE sync issue and it was unplayable for her. Any time she moved her character the...

Ryse: Son Of Rome is a 3rd person action game about the story of Marius Titus who almost single-handed saves the Roman Empire from the Celtic Barbarians. Assassin's Creed Origins in Proton

  • 2,871

My previous post on Assassin's Creed Origins regarded Discovery mode where you can explore and learn about Egypt, Greece and the Roman Empire. This is a non-violent way to play, explore, climb and learn.

Assassin's Creed Origins is much more than just exploring, there are complex stories of murder, traitors, foul-play and much more. Traverse the wide variety of terrain in the middle east as you fight soldiers, hide in the shadows, slay crocodiles, fight in an arena, stealth execute officers or escape by the skin-on-your-teeth.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/582160/Assassins_Creed_Origins/

I've spent over 90 hours revealing the entire map of the middle east, completing main quests and side quests... and there is still much more to do and explore. There is easily over 400+ hours of gameplay here and it pays off!
Initially Origins ran pretty well in Proton 5.0-10 with my GeForce GTX 1060... but later on I started getting some...

Stellar Overload in Linux

Stellar Overload is a crafting, harvesting, story-based action game in the same vein of Minecraft. Each planet is a massive cube and gravity falls according to each side of the cube. Find your brother in the resistance, mine for resources to craft your weapons, protect the colonies from the evil robots and build your own structures.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/397150/Stellar_Overload/

Sadly Cubical Drift left this game in eternal beta. It is a crowdfunded game with some epic goals, one of which is a Linux version. I was able to play natively in Linux without any issues. I could crank up the graphics and view distance to almost high and play with a decent frame rate. Too bad its no longer for sale on Steam.

The developers of Geneshift provide us with a great native Linux version and it plays beautifully. I was able to pick up Geneshift during a sale and got a few extra copies for my family. For the most part it is a typical twin-stick arcade shooter, but you can choose a bunch of upgrades depending on your level and how many coins you have. You can also drive cars-n-shoot or fly up or across buildings with jump-pads. In-game there are many NCP merchants who want to sell you stuff like grenades or ammo...

Terminator Resistance is yet another chapter in the epic story of a post apocalyptic world ruled by robots. This time you join a resistance in a war torn world, looting, crafting, sneaking and cleverly taking down machines to survive. First impressions are comparing Rage and Fallout series as the game is fairly linear but full of story, NCPs and exploration.

https://www.gog.com/game/terminator_resistance

I've only played a few hours at this point, but it runs pretty well with all the settings on epic and 1920x1080 on my GeForce GTX 1060. There is a base I arrived at and it started to slow down considerably, but still playable. When going out to explore it runs perfectly. This is an Unreal Engine made game so it required vcrun 2019 and Media Foundation installed. I had to skip some of the intro scenes, but in-game cutscenes ran fine.
